DC Institute is a private, non-profit community mental health center providing mental health and chemical dependency treatment for the residents of Davison, Sanborn, Aurora, Hanson, and Brule counties in South Dakota. The catchment area is considered rural with approximately 33,000 residents living within 2966 square miles. Abundant outdoor recreational activities are available within the surrounding area, including boating, fishing, golfing, and world renowned pheasant hunting. Mitchell is about 4 hours from Mount Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, the Black Hills, and the Badlands. Major cultural events and national sporting venues are easily accessible with a 3-4 hour drive to Omaha, Nebraska, or the Twin Cities in Minneapolis. July is typically the warmest month and high temperatures average 85 degrees Fahrenheit. January is typically the coldest month and averages a high temperature of 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Spring and fall usually provide moderate temperatures. Mitchell has a relatively low crime-rate, and reasonable cost of living. Mitchell is home to Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell Technical Institute, and Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Client Population Dakota Counseling Institute serves clients from a variety of social and economic strata. The majority of individuals served are Medicaid or Medicare recipients, although a large portion of clients at Dakota Counseling Institute have private insurance or other funding. Unfunded clients with low-income may request that fees for service be modified based on their ability to pay. Clients from all age ranges are served at Dakota Counseling Institute. Presenting problems addressed range from adjustment disorders and relational problems to severe and persistent mental illnesses. The majority of clients utilizing services are white, although Native Americans account for a large percentage of minority clients served. Hispanic, Asian, and African-American clients also utilize services at Dakota Counseling Institute. Mission The mission of Dakota Counseling Institute is to provide comprehensive mental health care to individuals who experience mental illness or behavioral disabilities. Dakota Counseling Institute is committed to service delivery that is responsive to individual differences and which represents professional standards of care. Dakota Counseling Institute will address the treatment of mental illness, and its individual and social effects, through traditional and outreach therapies, emergency services, and community education. Commitment to Professional Training The internship is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), and maintains standards of training consistent with APPIC membership. Dakota Counseling Institute is committed to professional training in clinical and counseling psychology. Graduate students from an APA-Accredited clinical psychology doctoral program, and a doctoral-level counseling program have received practicum training at Dakota Counseling Institute for over 20 years. Description of the Training Program The primary goal of the psychology internship is to prepare doctoral candidates for the independent practice of professional psychology. Training experiences include intake assessment, and delivering psychotherapy in outpatient and residential settings to children, adolescents, and adults. Training in psychological assessments includes parental fitness evaluations, disability determination assessments, and internal and external referrals for diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. Depending on psychology intern interests and skills, experiences may also be available in consulting with community agencies and professionals, and in emergency services, such as crisis evaluations and inpatient referrals. The program seeks to assist interns in developing core competencies in each of the following areas: 1. Professional conduct, in ethical and legal matters. 2. Individual and cultural diversity. 3. Theories and methods of psychological diagnosis and assessment. 4. Theories and methods of effective psychotherapeutic intervention. 5. Scholarly inquiry and application of current scientific knowledge and practice. 6. Professional consultation. 7. Supervision. Individual training needs and interests may lead to additional training goals, but we believe these core competencies will successfully prepare interns to begin their post-doctoral experiences. Interns are scheduled 44 hours weekly. Interns participate in two hours of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision each week. All supervision is conducted with licensed psychologists. One hour of didactic training and research and one hour of clinical case staffings are conducted weekly. Interns are expected to provide 15-25 hours of direct client services each week, with assessment accounting for approximately 25% and therapy accounting for approximately 75% of direct services. Interns participate in three performance evaluations throughout their internship year. Professional Staff There are approximately 80 employees at Dakota Counseling Institute.
